Happy Halloween!

What can I say, I've been inspired this Halloween by what we are studying in school! I hope everyone has a safe and as dry as possible Halloween! Please remember that if you are planning to send some Halloween treats in your child's lunch tomorrow, make sure it is an appropriate amount, as we still need to be functional tomorrow!

Halloween party

Many have been asking what we will be doing for Halloween on Wednesday.

-Students are more than welcome to wear their costume to school. Please make sure it is appropriate, and that accessories that look like weapons are left at home.

- We will have a party in the afternoon. We will be watching a movie, and students can bring treats to share with the whole class if they wish. Please make sure there are no nuts in the snacks so everyone can enjoy them! We are a class of 24.

- Also, I would like to invite parents into our class on Wednesday morning for 15 minutes so students can share their Halloween stories with you (even if you don't know French, please come anyways!). We will start at 9:05 to give us time to get set up.

It would be great to have an extra hand in the class that afternoon. If you're available to help out, please let me know!

Homework this weekend

This weekend's homework is to finish the haunted house/Halloween story that we started today in class. Students have the outlines and planning sheets they did, as well as the lined paper for their 'brouillon'. We did a brain storm of useful words in class to inspire their writing. Here are the words they came up with:

Secret Signal

I wanted to share with you an interesting conversation we had in class today. I noticed quite a few tones of voices in the class that were making me uncomfortable - immagine a high pitched whine of another student's name that suggested the other person had done wrong. We all stopped and talked about why this was happening. Infact, we figured out that it was just the way that students were asking their peers and friends to move, or help them with something. We all reflected on how this tone of voice made us feel, and decided that it made all of us (myself included) feel bad, or sad, or disrespected. As a class, we agreed upon a secret signal to use in class if we hear this voice - a finger tap on the side of our nose. This way, students can remind each other to use a nicer, more respectful voice in a simple way. So far, they've been great at using this, and using respectful voices in class and outside.

A quick note on math.

We have been doing lots of practice of simple (one digit) addition and subtraction. I've noticed some students could still use some practice with these. We will be starting two and three digit addition and subtraction this week, and students will need to recall basic math facts quickly to do this. Thanks for practicing at home!

It's been an exciting few days!

Here are a few pictures from our last few days - swimming, doing some running, math in our pajamas, and a popcorn treat!!

Week of October 22nd - update

Here are a few important notes on the upcoming week:

- This week, students picked their own dictee words. Their words are written on this week's page of their agenda.

- Tomorrow, October 23rd, we will be having a pajama day as a class prize. Students can come in pajamas and may bring one reasonable sized stuffy.

- We have swimming again tomorrow afternoon. I will send an email this evening to confirm volunteers.

- I will be changing the day we do our art this week to Friday afternoon as some students will be away Thursday. If you are still interested in volunteering Friday afternoon, please let me know!

Help with art

I'm putting the word out that I'd love some help with an art project next week, on Thursday October 25th in the afternoon. We will be starting around 1:30, but if you could show up by 1 to help me set up and go over the project that would be great! No special art experience necessary, just helping hands, and a willingness to get a little messy with paint and paper and glue!

Also, be sure to ask your student about the toilet paper project we did today!

Pencil Sharpeners

I have a quick favour to ask: if you have an extra pencil sharpener with attached 'shavings catcher' at home, could you please send it to school? We seem to have just a few sharpeners of and it's becoming a bit of an issue in the class. Thanks in advance!

Dictée - week of October 15

Here is this week's dictée. Since this Friday is a professional day, we will have our dictée celebration on Thursday.

Picture Update!

Here are some pictures from the past few weeks of school. Ask your students what was going on! Speaking of updates, I have added a calendar, as well as an 'interesting links' section at the top. Check it out for some cool websites!

Rainy Days

Just a reminder that our normal Vancouver weather has returned, so students need to come to school prepared for the rain. On rainy days, students should bring to school:

- a rain jacket

- rainy day shoes

Students should always have inside shoes at school to change into, so we can keep our classroom tidy. If you haven't sent inside shoes to school, please do so next week!

60 Minutes Kids Club

A few weeks ago, we had the chance to learn about a great program called 60 Minutes Kids Club. We attended an assembly where we learned the importance of eating right, drinking enough water, getting enough exercise, and sleeping enough. 60 Minutes Kids Club helps us track all of these things, so that we can make sure that we are getting enough. Tonight's homework is to sign up! Please do this with your child, and review how to sing in everyday. This isn't something that we will be doing in class, so please try to help your child remember to log in and track their habits every day! Your help is much appreciated!

Home Reading

Bonjour everyone,

As you hopefully saw, there was a home reading sheet that came home last week. On it, students are to write the date, the book, the pages and what was in their mind while they were reading. There is no right answer for this last column. It is for students to make connections with what they're reading, reflect on the content of the book, or even if it is the right reading level for them. Students can fill out one space for every 15 minutes read, or just fill in one row, and add the time at the end. For next month, we will have a column for time and will start a class tally of minutes we have read!

Dictée week of October 8th

Bonjour everyone! I hope you all had a great weekend. I'm sorry this post is late. Here is this week's dictée. It's 4 sentences instead of words this week. As you may notice, the first sentence has one letter - an 'e' at the end of allé - that is green. That is because it is only the girls who need to write that e. we will be starting 'le passé composé' in our grammar lessons next week, where the students will learn more about this!

Math update

Thank you all for your input on our math book situation. There was enough interest in switching to jump math, that we will go ahead and get the books. There is some logistical paperwork that I need to work through on my end, then I will be sending more information home.
