Just a reminder that tomorrow is jump rope for heart. Remember to wear clothes you can jump in!

The students were working hard on some art and French projects, along with all the socials and science we have been doing. Stop by the bulletin boards in the hall to see all their great work

What a busy week it has been! Lots of writing, lots of science and socials, and lots of time planting our seeds and observing our plants. Here are pictures to help get some discussions going at home

Monday 11 April 2016

Hi everyone,

I'm playing a bit of catch up today, since last week was a bit busy with conferences. Sorry for the overload of information! Thank you to everyone for coming to the conferences, and for being so understanding with the re scheduling. I loved seeing the children so excited to show you their work. It was a little different since we are at the beginning of a term, but it's also nice to show you where we are starting this term

Thank you everyone who brought in donations for our garden. We could still use some large containers, as well as some corn and spinach seeds. If you have soil available that would be great as well! It's so nice to do gardening with this age, as they are really learning how to take care of something and be responsible for it.

Thank you as well for all the donations for today's presentation by Northwest Wildlife Preservation Society. We heard a great presentation today about climate change and the effect it is having on animals. Sometimes, this subject can be intense. We had a great conversation after the presentation about the goal of educating them on this subject. It's not to traumatize them, but instead to see what will continue to happen to our earth if we don't change our habits. These children are our future and I a hoping to inspire them to take more environmentally friendly choices in their lives (now and future) and to encourage others to do the same. We will talk much more about this around Earth Day on April 22. If your child comes home saying you need to walk everywhere, get solar panels, and drive electric cars, I apologize! Those are all ideas they were super pumped about in our discussion today. I've posted some photos below to help along with any discussions you may want to have tonight.

For term 3, library day has changed. We will now be exchanging books on Fridays. This week, since there is no school on Friday, we will take books out on Thursday. Merci to Mr Daniel for taking time out of his busy day to check out the class' books. If you have any overdue library books at home, please send them anytime!

I hope the weekly writing is going well. I'm loving reading their work. Just a reminder that this is important work as it is where they get most of the feedback from their writing. As you saw during conferences, I don't correct every piece of writing they do as I want them to just focus on getting their ideas on paper and organizing them into sentences. Now that we are in term 3, I will be correcting more of their work, especially this weekly writing. I am also hoping to help them learn more responsibility for their work, as in grade 4, they will be expected to be doing much more homework, and make sure it is at school for the day it's due. Please help your child find a system at home to support them in remembering to bring their work to school. It may be that they always keep it in a specific spot (agenda, backpack, desk), or whatever works for you. If you would like some ideas, or to talk about other ways to help your child, please let me know!

For term 3, we will be focusing on writing in French Language arts as well. We will be writing stories and editing them. Since this will be our major focus in school, instead of reading, it is extremely important that you support students in their home reading programs, and making sure they read every night.

As you saw during conferences, we have been working on division up to 25/5. We have been learning to divide in two ways: ___ in groups of ___     or     ___ in ___ groups. Our next math units are fractions, telling time, and measurement!

In science, we will be learning all about plants! If you do any gardening at home, try to involve your child in it, even if it's just helping water and weed the garden.

In socials we are learning all about Canada. We have worked lots with maps, and will be moving on to learning more in depth about each province and territory. If you have taken family vacations to anywhere in Canada, and are willing to share any pictures of the scenery with us, it would be greatly appreiated! You could email it to me, or send a copy to school. I could pull up any stock photos of Canada, but it's always more meaningful when it has a class connection.

I belive this is all for now.

Thank you for being such great partners in your child's education!

Thank you everyone for being so understanding with rescheduling conferences. Just a reminder that these conferences are student-led, so make sure you bring them too!

See you all tomorrow and thursday
